Tiger Woods kicked off a busy two-week stretch of golf Monday by playing in a nine-hole, made-for-television exhibition match against young Japanese star Ryo Ishikawa at Yokohama Country Club near Tokyo.
Later this week, Woods will compete in the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai at Sheshan International. Last year, Woods finished second by two strokes to winner David Howell of England in the inaugural tournament.
Woods, who saw his 281-week, five-year run as the No. 1 player in the world end Sunday to Lee Westwood, could regain his top ranking with a strong finish in China. Woods had held the No. 1 ranking since just prior to the 2005 U.S. Open, where he finished second to Michael Campbell at Pinehurst Resort. He solidified the top spot with a victory one month later at the British Open at St. Andrews.
"As far as the world ranking is concerned, yes, I'm not ranked No. 1 in the world," Woods said Monday. "In order to do that you have to win, and I didn't win this year." cont
